Opioid use disorder and prescription drug misuse continue to be an urgent public health issue in Maine. Studies and data show that often the home can be the source of medicines being misused, both by youth and adults. Additionally, large stores of prescription medications can make homes targets for robberies, creating public safety issues. In both cases, an important prevention strategy is regular disposal of medicines that are expired, unwanted, or unneeded, while medicines that are still being taken are properly stored and secured. Maine and local communities have risen to the challenge and developed drug take back programs and strategies to address these very issues, including the very successful National Drug Take Back program, coordinated in Maine by the Maine Sheriffs Association.
